Comparative Adjectives (-er / more / less): quick rule

En inglés hay dos formas principales de formar comparativos:

Adjective lengthComparative formExample
1 syllableadjective + ertall → taller
2 syllables (some)adjective + erhappy → happier
3+ syllablesmore / less + adjectiveinteresting → more interesting / less interesting

Los comparative adjectives se usan para comparar dos cosas.

La estructura básica es:

comparative adjective + than

Ejemplos:

  • This beat is heavier than the previous one.
  • My verse is better than the last one.
  • This song is more emotional than the first one.

1️⃣ Comparativos con -er

Los adjetivos cortos (normalmente de una sílaba) forman el comparativo añadiendo -er.

adjective + er + than

Ejemplos:

  • fast → faster than
  • strong → stronger than
  • cold → colder than

Oraciones:

  • This flow is faster than yours.
  • My voice sounds stronger than before.

Los adjetivos largos (normalmente de dos o más sílabas) usan more o less.

2️⃣ Comparativos con more

more + adjective + than

Ejemplos:

  • creative → more creative than
  • powerful → more powerful than
  • difficult → more difficult than

Oraciones:

  • This rhyme is more creative than the previous one.
  • That verse is more emotional than mine.

3️⃣ Comparativos con less

También podemos comparar usando less para indicar menor grado.

less + adjective + than

Ejemplos:

  • This beat is less aggressive than the last one.
  • My new verse is less complicated than the previous one.
  • This problem is less serious than it looks.

Después de than, en inglés informal normalmente usamos:

  • object pronoun (me, him, her, us, them)

Ejemplo:

  • ✔ She’s taller than me.
  • ✔ He runs faster than him (aunque aquí normalmente diríamos than he does).

En inglés formal o muy cuidadoso, se usa el subject pronoun + verb.

Ejemplos:

  • She is taller than I am.
  • He runs faster than he does.

4️⃣ Reglas comunes de ortografía

Al formar comparativos con -er, a veces cambia la ortografía.

1. Consonante duplicada

Si el adjetivo es corto (CVC), la consonante final se duplica.

  • big → bigger
  • hot → hotter
  • sad → sadder

2. Adjetivos terminados en -y

La y cambia a i.

  • happy → happier
  • easy → easier
  • heavy → heavier

3. Algunos comparativos irregulares

  • good → better
  • bad → worse
  • far → farther / further

Ejemplos:

  • This line is better than the previous one.
  • That decision was worse than expected.
